HellermannTyton launches Mercury

August 2019 Sensors & Transducers

HellermannTyton recently launched the Mercury, which combines the functionality usually performed by multimeters and IR cameras into a single compact, portable device. The built-in IR camera detects hot spots caused by electrical problems or malfunctions and ensures problems are resolved. The instrument can then be set to measure via Bluetooth while the user moves away from possibly dangerous areas.

The data logger function and real-time display of graphs of measured data can be viewed on the TFT high-contrast colour screen measuring counts enabling the user to log voltage and current trends with selectable sampling rate: from 1s to 15min. Measurements of AC TRMS, DC and AC+DC current can be taken when connected to either a rigid or the included 3000 A flexible clamp transducer while temperature is measured by means of an external K-type probe. The instrument also performs diode tests and measurements of frequency and duty cycle, as well as resistance and there is a buzzer for continuity tests. The device is light in weight (55g including batteries) and comes with an IP65 rating and a built-in white-light torch.

Photovoltaic installations

Current and voltage in a photovoltaic string can be measured by the Mercury by way of a clamp transducer that immediately detects any problems that may exist in the system. Thermographic analysis can be performed on the photovoltaic modules in order to reveal the presence of any overheated modules or cells.

The device measures both open-circuit string voltage (Voc) as well as string operating voltage (Vmpp) while ensuring current provided by string in operating conditions (Impp) readings do not differ by more than 5% from string to string. The status of filter capacitors found in inverters (a critical element of PV installations) as well as the status of the locking and bypass diodes can also be displayed.

Mercury forms part of the next generation instruments along with the Jupiter, Flashmeter, Ironmeter and Neptune.
