Analyser for combustion process control

December 2013 Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring

The Ametek Thermox WDG-V combustion analyser provides a complete solution for combustion process control and process control safety applications. The close-coupled extractive combustion analyser measures oxygen, combustibles and methane levels in hot, wet flue gas. It is suitable for a wide range of flue gas applications up to 1648°C and is completely field serviceable.

The analyser provides a reliable and cost-effective solution for monitoring combustion, reducing excess oxygen, lowering NOx, CO and CO2 emissions and improving operating efficiency. The reliable detection of low-combustion oxygen and high or low combustibles in a fired heater or boiler is critical to the effectiveness of burner management systems. Providing a layer of control and safety for the basic process control system, the analyser significantly reduces the risk of an uncontrolled combustion event. This versatile instrument can enable interlock and shutdown functions for burner management and safety instrumented systems.

The WDG-V has an improved aspirator design with larger orifice sizes and improved response times, even with flame arrestors installed. Its low-flow sample alarm monitors combustion gas flow at the sensors and provides an indication of low sample flow, while cell and detector age tracking enable proactive calibration or service scheduling.

The WDG-V can be installed as a stand-alone analyser with analog/HART, discrete and Modbus RS-485 bidirectional communications, or it can be supplied in a typical sensor/controller configuration. The addition of an AME Vision HMI provides a graphical display and membrane keypad, Modbus, TCP/IP Ethernet connection, embedded web enabled interface and USB data collection port.

Based on a field-proven design pioneered by Ametek more than 40 years ago, the analyser offers accuracy and ease of maintenance in a wide range of applications. It is a superior alternative to in situ probes, even in heavy particulate and high temperature flue gas streams.
