Addressable RS422/485 to RS232 converter
November 2003
PLCs, DCSs & Controllers
An intelligent RS422/485 to RS232 converter specifically designed to connect RS422/485 devices to an RS232 network is available from ProMicro.
RS232, although widely available on most computer systems, measurement equipment, PLCs and industrial devices, has limitations in transmission speed, communication distance and networking capability due to unbalanced transmission. The ADAM-4521 addressable converter solves this problem and lets the user build up an RS485 network with the RS232 devices by assigning each one an address for easier communication.
The addressable converter is equipped with a built-in microprocessor that uses two UARTs and automatically processes data before transmitting it to the RS232 device. This allows the ADAM-4521 to handle different baud rates between RS232 devices and the RS485 network.
The device features automatic RS485 data flow control, power and data flow indication for troubleshooting and software is configurable to either addressable or non-addressable mode. The module has a transmission speed of up to 115,2 Kbps, 1 kV d.c. isolation and surge protection is provided on the RS485 line. All communication set-ups are stored in EEPROM and the device may be DIN rail, panel or piggyback mounted.
