Starter for smoothing stops and starts

Danfoss has strengthened its Decentral Drive range with the addition of a universal motor switch that is compatible with all standard AC motors. Available in the power range 0,18 to 3 kW, the DMS 300 has been designed for distributed motor applications where it is not necessary to vary speed.

"DMS 300 greatly extends motor life through electronic switching that operates in both directions of rotation," explains Mick Baugh, Danfoss business unit manager, Motion Control & Flow. "In addition to its uniquely soft start/stop functionality, it also smoothly controls the switching on/off of mechanical brakes."

ETR- or thermistor control further extends the product's motor protection characteristics. DMS 300 can be mounted directly on any standard asynchronous or geared motor - or close to the motor it controls. Ramp times are adjustable by means of DIP-switches.

Consisting of a fixed installation box and an electronic part that is plugged onto the installation box, DMS 300 provides easy installation, maintenance and trouble-shooting. Instead of screws, special stage clamp terminals with T-functionality for looping of cables were incorporated into the new product's design.

"DMS 300 makes it possible to integrate simple drives in distributed installation systems, including mains-operated motors on fieldbus networks," Baugh points out. "With the optional Profibus connection, signals from four external sensors can be included. Even a service switch can be integrated as an option." Control takes place via either AS-interface or binary I/Os. An IP66 robust painted enclosure protects the DMS 300 against aggressive cleaning methods - this combined with a smooth surface makes it suitable for hygienic applications. Other benefits included in the design are visible status LEDs, pluggable electronics and an optional mechanical brake.
