The wide range of Sensotec LVDTs includes precision types, having full scale movement of 0,5 mm, long stroke types which have a full scale movement of 940 mm, submersible types and miniature types. These rugged, stainless steel sensors are used to gauge movement in (for example) hydraulic applications in industry or temperature tests in laboratories.
The LVDTs are available as free unguided, captive guided or spring return types. The free unguided units are recommended when the target moves parallel to the sensor body and the captive spring return units are for targets moving transverse to the sensor body. The captive guided armature moves over machined bearings and is best for the longer working ranges.
Another consideration in the selection process is d.c.–d.c. versus a.c.–a.c. The DC types are easy to install, work off batteries in remote locations and have a lower system cost. The AC types have a smaller body and use more sophisticated electronics which results in greater accuracy. The maximum nonlinearity on all units is 0,25% FS.
