Angular synchronising of open loop drives
March 2002
Motion Control & Drives
Production lines often require synchronisation of sequential motors, either for 100% angular synchronisation or to generate precision 'stretch' values. Normally these functions would have to be provided by specialised high-tech drives.
Where the line is already equipped with open loop drives, or where a limited budget exists, LG Industrial Systems offers a suitable solution, effecting synchronism by employing the high-speed counter modules on its GM6 and GM4 range of PLCs.
The high speed counter cards operate in realtime, being independent of the usual PLC cycle time. This form of control also enables the output shaft positions to be advanced or retarded by any desired amount, or to be run in precision ratios one to the other.
The motors need to be fitted with encoders, which then feed back to the PLC high-speed counter cards. The cards are programmed to provide phase-locked loop control, thereby ensuring precision positional control of the motors. The result is almost servo-like control at a fraction of the cost normally associated with this type of accuracy. Utilising a PLC for this purpose means that the normal digital control function requirements of the line may also be accommodated, along with full networking capabilities.
