Measuring wheel encoder for conveyor speed

August 2011 Motion Control & Drives

Often it is not advisable or technically feasible to install the encoder straight at the drive train to detect the speed of a conveyor belt. Any slip occurring may cause measuring errors, or a speed feedback system might be required to synchronise the conveyor speed with the following process steps. Typical fields of application are labelling operations in the packaging or bottling process and observation of defined time intervals, for example where material has to be conveyed through a heating furnace or oven. Measuring wheel encoders master such tasks and are also used in letter and parcel sorting facilities as well as in the textile and printing industry.

The Baumer measuring wheel encoder MA20 provides flexible and dependable position and speed feedback straight at the conveyor. The device unites a high-resolution optical incremental encoder and a precision measuring wheel with a suspended arm bracket. Low conveyor speeds call for high resolutions; the patented LowHarmonics technology makes the encoder capable of precision measurements even low speed. Continuously adjustable contact pressure ensures reliable surface contact without slip when application conditions change.

The measuring wheel with 200 mm circumference is available with various rubber harnesses to ensure optimal adhesion to the measured material. The pivoting arm bracket allows for quick and easy installation. The encoder operates on a supply 4,75 to 30 VDC with connection via an M12 connector. With IP64 protection and ambient operating temperatures from -20 to +85°C, the measuring wheel encoder is suitable for use in harsh operating environments.
