Michael Brown is holding a series of his well known courses on practical process control in Johannesburg. The courses are unique and invaluable to novices, as well as to experienced practitioners in the field of regulatory control optimisation.
The series consists of two courses:
* Introduction and appreciation of practical process control: one day for non-instrument personnel who work in process plants, but have no previous experience or practical training in control, such as: process engineers; operators; production managers; metallurgists and chemical engineers. It is also recommended that people who are attending the Parts 1+2 the following week should attend the introductory course.
* Practical Process Control Parts 1 & 2: five days for instrument and control personnel like mechanicians, technicians and engineers. Even people with years of experience in this field have found the course an eye-opener. Subjects covered include: loop problems and troubleshooting; tuning and control of processes with difficult dynamics and techniques like feed-forward. (It should be noted that the two parts have been combined into one session, and may no longer be taken separately.)
The courses will take place in Johannesburg starting on Friday 12 November. Booking should be made early as the courses are often oversubscribed.

When tuning noisy loops, we recommend in our courses that one should eliminate the noise by editing it out, so the tuning will be done only on the true process response, free of any noise. The controller is controlling the process, and is not controlling the noise.

The widely held belief in many plants that tuning will solve all base layer control problems is completely fallacious. Bad tuning is generally not the main reason for loops to perform badly. It is important when performing optimisation that all elements in a loop are considered, in addition to the control strategy, before even thinking of tuning.
