Servo technology for yoghurt

April 2003 Motion Control & Drives

The Dosomat filling machine fills yoghurt with and without fruit additives into 1 kg tubs. For this purpose, high requirements are specified in terms of cleanliness, packaging material sterilisation, precise dosage and reliable capping techniques. This plant is designed for a maximum of 9000 tubs/h. This means that up to nine tons of yoghurt can be processed per hour.

Thanks to modular technology, movement sequences from various production processes can be precisely adapted to the respective products according to customer requirements. Geared servomotors operated by Movidrive drive inverters allow all movement sequences to be adapted to the respective product. The filling sequence consists of:

* Unstacking of the tubs from storage.

* Sterilisation of the tubs with hydrogen peroxide.

* Filling of the tubs with various yoghurt types under re-infection-free conditions.

* Unstacking of the lids from storage.

* Sterilisation of the lids with hydrogen peroxide.

* Sealing of the tubs with their lids.

The Dosomat drives are mainly SEW speed-controlled right angle geared motors that are adaptable to machine design. The dosing mechanism is driven by four SEW synchronous geared servomotors with reduced backlash bevel gear units.

The process is controlled by four servo controllers from the Movidrive MDS series with electronic cam and internal synchronous operation technology functions as well as additional individual technology programmes under IPOSplus, for the realisation of the special filling curves in terms of volume flow/time per tub. Two SEW K-series geared motors - one each for three dosing nozzles - are responsible for dosing by removing the product from the feed hopper and ejecting it into the tubs via filling valves. A geared servomotor controls the opening degree of the filling valves and the fourth geared servomotor performs the precise lifting or lowering of the tubs under the filling valves.

The precise co-ordination of all the elements in the system is affected via communication with Profibus. The plant is also equipped with a remote diagnostics system whereby the operations engineer is automatically notified of a fault, and its type.
