Open control system for PC-based systems

June 2001 System Integration & Control Systems Design

The ADAM-5510 Series from Advantech is good for PC-based data acquisition and control applications. It is a compact, standalone controller with an Intel x86-based CPU running Datalight ROM-DOS.

For professional C/C++ programmers, application programs may be written and compiled in Inprise (Borland) Turbo C and downloaded to the ADAM modules. Alternatively, ADAM-5510/P31's built-in Paradym-31 runtime engine is an ideal solution for traditional PCL users. Each ADAM-5510 system can handle up to 4 I/O slots, up to 64 I/O points.

The device adopts a popular RS485 bus, which can work with as a standalone unit or within a distributed control system. Users only need to write a program in C to run on ADAM-5510 for a general-purpose application.

MODBus RTU protocol assures data transfer rate and system performance to be accelerated with enhanced stability. For easy programming, Paradym-31 offers three powerful, easy-to-use design languages based on the IEC 1131-3 standard for SoftLogic configuration: sequential function charts (SFC), ladder diagram (LD) and function block diagrams (FDB) to define automation and control procedures.

In addition to 256 KB of Flash ROM, ADAM-5511/5510/P31 provide 512 KB of Flash disk space plus 256 KB of SRAM. The series supports a complete line of industrial I/O modules including digital I/O, analog I/O, counter, and special purpose I/O modules such as T/C and RTD. It also offers well-stocked Inprise C libraries, including system resources functions, I/O functions, popular control algorithms and communication functions.
