Yokogawa SA fights skills shortage

July 2009 Training & Education

At a ceremony on 29 May Yokogawa South Africa received accreditation from University of Johannesburg to offer work integrated learning (WIL). The ceremony took place at the Doornfontein campus in Johannesburg, where Yokogawa SA was one of more than 20 companies who received certification.

WIL forms part of a learner’s three-year curriculum to complete the National Diploma: Engineering at the UJ. Learners spend two years at a University of Technology to complete the academic work (theory and practical), and then need to complete one year of WIL at an appropriate company that has been accredited.

Yokogawa South Africa has embarked on a strong drive towards training and skills development and appointed training manager, Nico Marneweck, early in 2009. On 1 July two final-year students, Joyce Kgaka and Lebohang Mokhele, will join Yokogawa’s learnership programme. “What makes Yokogawa’s programme unique is the company’s strength in the field of control and measurement. On the control side Yokogawa launched its first distributed control system back in 1975. On the measurement, Yokogawa released its first silicon digital sensor differential pressure transmitter in 1994,” elaborates Marneweck.

Yokogawa has formed alliances with its international partners in South Africa to offer comprehensive WIL for learners who join the programme at Yokogawa. “Yokogawa’s programme is neither limited nor restricted to the Yokogawa basket of control and measurement instruments, but includes Vega, Wika, LappKabel and Metso equipment to offer a complete automation and control learnership programme,” says Marneweck.

“We are looking forward to welcoming our first two learners to this exciting programme that Yokogawa offers, and to continue combating the skills shortage in the automation industry,” he concludes.
