Easy light curtain

May 2005 Sensors & Transducers

Telco reports already having enjoyed considerable success with its SG 1 light curtain system, with customers especially liking the fact that the system is easy to install as well as to use. The fact that there is no set up required is a major factor for many customers when making a decision on what light curtain to opt for.

For specialised elevator applications, a demand was made for a customised, shorter version of self-contained light curtain and so Telco's R&D department developed an 85 cm light curtain with 16 channels and 74 crossed beams.

This system met demands satisfactorily and has been used in several specialised elevator applications.

Since its development, however, its uses have been expanded and in addition to the 16-channel model, there is now an 8-channel model, developed principally to solve an application in the laundry industry.

Laundry application

The 16-channel model did in fact solve the application but the customer wanted a faster response time to allow for detection of the smaller items of clothing, thus the SG 1-085-008 was developed with 34 crossed beams which gives the customer the <40 ms response time needed.

More models now available

Despite the shorter length, the beam pattern created by the crossed beams is still relatively dense, even in the 8-channel model, and it has been successfully used in various applications.

Penthouse elevator application

One application was for a penthouse elevator. The owner of the penthouse apartment wanted to ensure that he only ever called an elevator that was completely empty. The SG 1 8-channel was mounted on two sides to the elevator, lying horizontally across the inner wall about half way up and if anyone is in the elevator the light curtain detects them.

Both of these short versions of the SG 1 light curtain offer all of the features and benefits seen in the standard 20 and 40-channel models, including the time out function and the advanced automatic signal-tracking (AST) feature.
