Easy parameter setting of vision sensors

June 2025 Sensors & Transducers

Contour verification and object inspection are two of the most important functionalities in industrial imaging. With the new O2D5xx series, ifm now offers a solution that perfectly masters both functionalities. The results are processed directly in the unit.

In many cases image processing solutions, which are often needed for quality assurance in industrial production, are very complex. With the devices of the O2D5xx series, ifm is now launching a series that significantly simplifies programming and set-up. Parameter setting and programming are done using the Vision Assistant. The user is guided step-by- step through the parameter setting process in this intuitive software. Thanks to tailor-made wizards, standard applications can be implemented very easily. The Logic Layer enables visual programming and logical links. For experts in image processing, an advanced mode with numerous additional functions is included.

To avoid extraneous light interference, the new vision sensor uses a special process. In quick succession, it takes up to five pictures with different exposure times. The software can then select and evaluate the picture with the best exposure. Thanks to an integrated daylight filter, the O2D5xx is insensitive to extraneous light. With the help of an optional polarisation filter, interference caused by reflections on metallic surfaces can also be avoided. The O2D5xx with integrated LED lighting is available in two versions: The RGB-W version has four illumination segments in the red (625 nm), green (525 nm), blue (453 nm) and white (400 to 700 nm) spectral range. With the RGB-W version, it is possible to differentiate between the colours of objects, even without using a colour sensor. For this purpose, single pictures are taken with different lighting. The infrared version operates in the infra-red spectral range (850 nm), which is not visible to the human eye.

The new vision sensors are ideal for inline quality control in industrial manufacturing processes. Typical examples are contour verification of injection moulded parts or checking whether a hole has been provided with a thread. Such applications contribute to an improvement in quality and can positively influence the OEE and improve economic efficiency.
