PSY International screw compressor becomes energy efficient

January 2017 System Integration & Control Systems Design

Control specialist PSY International recently collaborated with compressor specialist, Air Rotory Services, to create an energy-efficient screw compressor.

PSY’s Paul Young believes the key was in using a frequency converter: the ABB ACS 800 Series VSD combined with the ABB AC500 PLC. “The AC500, AC500-eCo, AC500-S and AC500-XC scalable PLC ranges provide solutions for small, middle and high-end applications,” he explains. “ABB's AC500 platform offers different performance levels and is the ideal choice for high availability, extreme environments or safety solutions.

“The ABB ACS800 single drives are available both as complete AC drives and as modules. They have direct torque control (DTC) as standard, support a wide range of fieldbus protocols and have flexible I/O and encoder options. In addition, they are specifically designed for industrial applications in process industries such as the pulp and paper, metals, mining, cement, power, chemical, and oil and gas, which made it the perfect solution for us.”

This project will result in large cost and energy savings for the manufacturing company.

Air Rotory Services’ John Roselt is excited at the prospect of introducing green solutions in the manufacturing industry: “There are multiple compressors within a company and multiple companies around the country that can benefit from this solution. It’s an obvious decision, who wouldn’t want to save on their energy bill?”

According to Young: “It was a pleasure working with Roselt and his skilled team and we look forward to future projects together, where we can again put our system integration expertise into action to implement energy saving solutions across other manufacturing companies.”
