Saryx – agility and diversity the key to problem solving

October 2016 System Integration & Control Systems Design

With a desire to deliver bespoke ICT services and the in-house development of products, Julie Mathieson and Ingrid Osborne started Saryx Engineering Group in 2007. This initiative led to, amongst others, the development of HSEC OnLine, a complete online risk and document management solution.

“We were already involved in plant control solutions, including the terminal control system at Richards Bay Coal terminal (RBCT) and it was a natural progression into the rail industry, where Saryx produced wireless solutions capable of coping in this harsh environment. Five years ago we started a control and automation department which complements the many high-level solutions within our portfolio,” says Osborne.

After nine years in business, Saryx is now able to offer turnkey solutions that include consulting engineering, project management, MES and MIS design and development, systems integration, scada/HMI development, expert system design, network design and administration, wireless solutions, MCC design and manufacturing, radio and telemetry, and hardware.

A metered dose applicator for the forestry and silviculture industry is a perfect example of the company’s investment in products developed to meet a specific industry need. The applicator is driven with a diaphragm pump and controlled by a computer. Any desired dosages may be programmed and these pre-programmed dosages can be selected and alternated on the fly. Other examples of where this application has been successful include watering and liquid fertilising, where different metered dosages are required.

Saryx has its own registered in-house training centre, where the company’s two engineers, six senior developers, five control and automation specialists, three developers and four junior developers have access to a wide spectrum of training courses. The same facilities are available to customers and additional training can be provided on-site when required.

Employees regularly attend product specific training at supplier facilities. This has resulted in Saryx being accredited as a Wonderware system integrator, Adroit system integrator, Siemens partner, Oracle Gold Partner, Gensym G2 system integrator, MICT Seta accredited and a Microsoft Partner. Saryx was recently honoured with the Wonderware Top System Integrator Award in the Open Awards category.

In addition to being licensed to sell hardware and software for all suppliers with which the company holds certification, Saryx is also an African partner for LBFoster Salient Systems products: WILD (wheel impact load detector) systems for monitoring wheel impacts, RailStress Monitor for monitoring longitudinal rail stress, WIM (weigh-in-motion) and TOID (train overload imbalance detectors) for monitoring train and vehicle weights and HTD (hunting truck detector) for monitoring high speed stability.

“A passion for collaboration, innovation and evolution has enabled us to design, engineer and implement smart solutions for a number of customer challenges. We have a solid and stable reputation and we focus on producing tangible results. These characteristics have resulted in the successful completion of a number of projects in South Africa, southern Africa and internationally,” adds Osborne.

Some of these highlights include two projects at the Richards Bay Coal Terminal (RBCT) – the upgrade of existing single sub InTouch to a Wonderware system platform R2 and TCS stabilisation as well as the complete replacement of the existing Promace, Dataview TCS scada with a Wonderware system platform R2. In 2014, the company was involved in the development of an IT-based rail stress monitoring system in cooperation with Salient and Transnet.

Other notable achievements are stacker reclaimer drives and MCC, TCS replacement, water pump stations, WHIMS machines, pneumatic ship-unloaders, hoppers, stacker to land radio links and stacker to stacker radio links, pipeline software and instrumentation and building management system, and woodchip plant maintenance.

“Currently our focus is shared value. We have a vision to help improve our country, create opportunities and share our skills with those around us,” concludes Osborne.
