SAIMC invests in education

The South African Institute of Measurement & Control (SAIMC) recently made a cash donation of R10 000 to Technikon Mangosuthu, just outside of Durban. The money will be used to help equip the instrumentation and control laboratory.
"The funding of such grants is drawn solely from the Institute's membership subscriptions," says SAIMC Past President, John Immelman. "It is one of the ways in which our members and patrons are able to give something back to their communities - especially the tertiary institutions that will be providing us with the skilled practitioners of the future.

"We estimate that for every one hundred students that enrol in our School of Engineering, approximately one third choose 'instrumentation' as a discipline," says Ralph Naidoo, instrumentation lecturer. "Of those 30 students, only 30% will graduate. Of the remaining number, an alarmingly high percentage of graduates change discipline and move into the communications arena. They have the impression that there is a brighter future working for one of the communication giants. The result is that we are not able to keep pace with the measurement and control industry's demand for qualified technical staff."

"The objective of the SAIMC is to foster long-term economic growth for South Africa through the advancement of measurement and control," continues Immelman. "We see a good education system as being essential to this growth. May I encourage our members that share our vision, and wish to contribute further, to contact our Executive Officer, Mike Marshall, on (011) 487 3003 or [email protected]."
Members are also reminded that they can notify the Institute of a change of address at www.saimc.org.za

“Never have so many owed so much to so few.” This phrase is a famous quote by Winston Churchill, referring to the efforts of the Royal Air Force pilots who fought in the Battle of Britain during World War II.
