As part of the SAIMC’s goal to collaborate with institutions of higher learning, the Cape Town branch recently sent a delegation to visit CPUT (Cape Peninsula University of Technology). The delegation first met with the university management team and after a successful meeting it was agreed that both CPUT and the SAIMC should work together for the benefit of the students and industry. A few items were agreed upon as ‘quick wins’ which could be implemented in the near future. Furthermore, a roadmap will be developed and areas of collaboration identified.
The delegation then met with final year C&I students to inform them on what their future work would entail, and encouraged them to pursue a C&I career. The students enjoyed the Q&A session where they had an opportunity to ask questions that were mostly about a career in C&I, the challenges and future opportunities.
They were then given a practical C&I problem to solve and the two best answers won a free one-year student membership to the SAIMC. The aim was to show that most problems can be solved quickly and cheaply by using ingenuity that keeps things simple. The two students who won the free memberships were Werner Hamilton Lotter and Matimba Ngobeni.
