April 2001 SAIMC

Secunda Branch

The meeting on 15 March 2001 was something new. Yokogawa sponsored the evening and enlightened the attendees with the basics of pH measurement. Rob Oliaro is a specialist in his field and he was hammered with questions from the floor. To end the evening, we were entertained with a braai and almost all of the 39 attendees stayed till the fire had burned out. Sarel, Rob and Danie were further punished with even more questions.

Golf shirts were displayed for the members to make a choice. These shirts will soon be available at around R60 each and golf caps at R30 each - any SAIMC member is welcome to order them from our branch.

The Secunda Branch will host their annual Golf day on 31 May at Walker Park and any interested parties can contact Peter Zietsman, the organiser at: [email protected] for more information. The objective is to have 120 golfers enjoying the day on the course. Last year was a big success and this year promises to be even better. This is definitely an event not to be missed.

We have almost finalised the site/factory visits planned for the year. On 10 April we will be visiting Instrotech. On 8 May we will visit Sasol, on 7 June a visit to Wika and if there is time left we can organise a visit to a cable factory hosted by OFT.

We will have our monthly meeting on 19 April. The topic must still be confirmed, but again it will be an excellent evening amongst friends. Keep watching this space - this is where it is happening.

Johannesburg Branch

It happened at last! Our March meeting was attended by almost 40 members, making it a record for the year so far and giving this committee a much-needed morale boost. The Johannesburg Committee goes to great lengths to make the meetings as exciting as possible and it really brings us down when it is poorly attended. Thank you to all who came to listen to Hertzog Mketi, Systems Specialist from Siemens, who gave an exhilarating talk on Profibus faultfinding.

Hertzog faced many challenges on the evening, including no fewer than four power failures during his presentation, unfased every time; he just proceeded to reboot his computers and restart his demo equipment. Well done to Hertzog and Siemens!

Our much publicised site visit to the SAB Centenary Centre turned out to be quite a hoot, with at least two car loads of girls from EE Publishers turning up to lend some colour to the occasion. Much fun was had all round, especially afterwards in the SAB Lounge, with frothy brews flowing freely.

Our next site visit will be to the BMW factory in Rosslyn during July - be sure not to miss it. This edition of branch news is also the last opportunity to remind everybody of the Business Breakfast on 31 May. Table bookings and enquiries can be sent to the e-mail address below. The official invitation and the programme of events will be sent to our members within the next few weeks.
