The April technology meeting for the Durban branch of the SAIMC was kindly sponsored by ProRisk, a subsidiary of the Proconics Group of Companies. Process safety engineer, Guillaume de Swardt was an accomplished presenter and gave a fascinating presentation on the power of operational risk control by utilising CFD software.
The presentation began with an introduction to operational risk and methods for effective risk reduction. It then explored practical, real-world applications of risk-based fire and gas mapping, demonstrating how this approach can solve complex engineering challenges. Examples included determining the safe location of HVAC inlets, modelling transformer pool fires and conducting gas dispersion analysis for bulk fuel storage areas. The session concluded with a forward-looking discussion on the evolving role of digital twins in shaping the future of operational risk management.
Guillaume obtained his Mechanical Engineering degree through the North West University in 2019. During his early career at Proconics his experience focused on piping design and pipe stress analysis. Guillaume’s work at ProRisk involves risk-based fire and gas detection mapping and quantitative consequence modelling in the petrochemical environment, so he was well qualified to present on this subject.
