Obituary: I was saddened to hear the news of Gordon Duff’s death on 4 May of a heart attack. Our industry will long remember Gordon for his experience and the wealth of knowledge that he always shared so feely with us.
The SAIMC Council has nominated Fanus Roux to represent us at the Department of labour OHSA Pressure Equipment Regulations – 2009 and SANS 347 committee. Fanus is a senior control systems engineer and we thank him for his availability and willingness to serve in this regard. Solly Mabitsela, chairman of the Vaal branch, will represent us on the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA). Solly replaces Johan Maartens, who has filled this role on our behalf for the past three years. We thank Solly for his commitment to the SAIMC and for volunteering his time to perform this very important function.
On the subject of ECSA: if you are not a registered professional with ECSA now is the time. It is a government organisation and presently it can take anything up to nine months to get your registration done. Remember the last day to register your firearms and the waiting for three days in queues. Do not wait until it becomes legislation to register, do it now to avoid the rush and start logging your CPD points.
We are very actively trying to get a Mozambique ‘Maputo’ branch up and running. Did you know it has one of the best economic growth rates in the world? Mr Belmiro Beve is trying desperately to put together a committee and would love to hear from you if you are resident in Mozambique. You can contact Belmiro on tel +25 (0)821 73 1387/8 or Cell +25 (0)82 328 3260 or better still send him an e-mail [email protected].
I am very pleased to report that our branches are all running well. I have been fortunate to attend technology evenings at our Vaal, Durban and Johannesburg branches, where the enthusiasm and attendance have been phenomenal. Cape Town has come up with some really innovative ideas. Well done to all the committees – keep up the good work!
If you need any assistance please feel free to contact us at [email protected] and remember to visit our website www.saimc.net.
