For the Cape Town branch of the SAIMC, 2009 has begun with a history lesson and back to the basics of engineering approach. This was ensured by Hendrik Keyzer of Real Time Solutions who delivered a passionate presentation and practical demonstration on micro controllers, their use and under-use within industry. Hennie came completely ‘wired’ to deliver the presentation. Our branch chairman was noticeably absent during this delivery but his presence was felt during the excellent supper!
The presentation began with a history lesson tracking the path of the micro controller from inception to today. Hennie firmly believes that micro controllers have their place in simple to advanced automation control within homes and even industry. An interesting point mentioned was that: if you want to play with micro controllers now, then you better do it soon as the future generation technology will render connections virtually impossible.
All in all – it was a great evening, thoroughly enjoyed by all present. The evening lasted well into the night (as usual) with further discussions on automation talent and healthy competition provided by our highly educated brothers and sisters over our borders.
The branch is planning on focusing on ECSA and CPD points during the next technology evening on 16 April 2009. This should give good guidance and information on the processes and desired outcomes of the initiative. This topic has, however, not been confirmed at time of writing.
The branch is also looking at various options to increase the membership levels in the region. Options such as transportation of students to the technology evening and starting a social networking site are being considered. An open invitation is hereby sent out to all members or potential members for suggestions on how we can achieve this goal. Please remember that the branch exists to serve all automation practitioners and you are welcome to contact the branch representatives at any time. They are:
