The Trident series of stainless steel computers from Vepac Electronics are all IP69K rated for total resistance to dust and water ingress. The series consists of a waterproof embedded IPC, the TWB-7010, and two varieties of all-in-one touchscreen computer, the TS-7010 and the TSC-7010.

Both the TS-7010 and TSC-7010 feature a 12th-generation Intel processor, a robust, durable touchscreen and the IP69K rating. This article explains the one key difference between the two products, how it affects their use and how to decide which is right for a given application.

The TS-7010 looks quite similar to the TSC-7010 until you examine the sides carrying the I/O. The TS-7010 has what looks like screw-on caps for each of its I/O, known as M12 connectors. Typical plug types, such as USB or LAN, are adapted to a uniform size and threaded for a durable, reliable connection.

The I/O on the TSC-7010 is not as easy to spot because it hides behind a cable gland. This can take many forms, but customarily involves a grommet or gasket that surrounds the cable and fits into a tightly sealed enclosure attached to the frame.

The primary difference between the TS-7010 and TSC-7010 comes down to the I/O. One has a specialised connector while the other protects standard cable types. Deciding which is right comes down to three factors:

• Stability: Both options provide a secure closure, but M12 connectors are the most firmly attached. The secure threads ensure the connection cannot be accidentally unplugged by vibration or a tug on the cable.

• Flexibility: M12 connectors are specifically adapted cables meant to work with a set number of pins, while the cable gland enclosure can seal any I/O cords. To add or change connections, the cable gland simply needs to be temporarily removed and reinstalled after the change.

• Cost: Price varies depending on materials and application. For a pre-existing outfitted setup that needs waterproofing, a cable gland unit works with cables already owned, whereas a new unit with M12 connectors adds the cost of new M12 cables or adapters.
