SAIMC Branch News

June 2000 SAIMC

Johannesburg Branch

To all our branch members out there who missed the first few meetings of 2000, guys and gals, you are certainly the poorer for it. We are experiencing very good turnouts, despite the onset of winter and the discussions are always very interesting and informative. At last month's meeting we were presented with some fascinating facts surrounding the supply of electricity from Eskom and the prices of electricity at different times of the day. Our members out there who are running their own manufacturing plants or machine shops would certainly have benefited from this talk.

The June meeting will be hosted by Fluor Daniel and we look forward to the talk by Dick Perry relating to alarm systems and trip monitoring in process control environments.

On 12 July 2000 we will be having our regular wine tasting function.

At the time of writing the venue was not yet confirmed, but we are hoping for a place at Kyalami. Members should check their e-mail in the near future for more information.

Following on from last month's good news of the Johannesburg Branch winning the Branch of the Year Award for 1999, we have yet more good news to report: The Welkom and Rustenburg Sub-branches have been officially granted full Branch status at the council meeting held on 17 May 2000. Congratulations to those committees who worked so hard to achieve this. That leaves Johannesburg branch with only one Sub-branch, Secunda, with a new Vaal Triangle Sub-branch in the near future. If Piet van Rensburg of the Secunda Branch has his way, we will soon see them applying for full Branch status. Their growth is phenomenal to say the least and the enthusiasm from their committee is unrivalled.

Important dates to remember for this year is our Business Breakfast that will take place during week 33/2000. Diarise this now, as this event is the highlight of our calendar and not to be missed. The annual Golf day will take place on 20 October 2000 at Killarney. Bookings and sponsorship are now available.

Secunda Sub-branch

After a drought of more than four months without a presentation the first one was held on the 11th of May 2000. Ivan Alexander from Optic Fibre Technologies presented to our members: How fibre is manufactured, the different applications where fibre can be used and the equipment available to interface to fibre.

This session was well appreciated and Ivan invited our members for a visit to the factory. We will definitely make use of the opportunity in the near future.
