May 2000 SAIMC

Johannesburg Branch:

The April branch meeting turned out to be the best attended so far this year. John Immelman of Endress + Hauser was the speaker for the evening and the subject was "Fieldbus Foundation - is it ready for us?" He took everyone on a tour of fieldbus technology and the pros and cons thereof. Afterwards, John was presented with a framed copy of a cartoon of himself by Chris Yelland of the Elektron Journal. The evening was thoroughly enjoyed by all - and many new faces were seen. This is exactly what we need to continue with the good work that has gone into the branch over the years.

The next meeting was held on 10 May 2000, the speaker was Johan Roos of Eskom and his talk centred on the realtime cost of electricity and the daily "bidding" by power stations to supply electricity to the national grid.

Something to also look forward to later this year, will be the wine tasting evening on 12 July 2000, to be held at a venue in Kayalami. We are hoping for a very large turnout. Keep watching this space for more information.

Schneider automation/SAIMC awards for best process and control student

The event was attended by Johan Grobler of WEVS, our Committee Secretary and he had the following to report:

Best process control students: Nolan Nel and Riaan Naude. The awards were presented by Johan Grobler and Derek Hey from Schneider Automation. On 12 April, also at RAU, the awards were handed over to Johannes Henning Viljoen by Prof W. Leuschner, at a graduation ceremony.
