Process interface modules with surge protection

February 2003 Electrical Power & Protection

The base terminals for Phoenix Contact process interface modules now feature integrated surge voltage protection. A combination of suppressor diode and gas tube arrester ensures a fast response together with high discharge capacity.

Previously this functionality had to be arranged using separate installation rails for the electronics. There are significant savings in wiring and space to be had. Three different base terminals with surge voltage protection are available:

* TT-PI-TB is a surge voltage protection base terminal for applications with no special explosion protection requirements.

* TT-PI-EX-TB is designed to meet the requirements of explosion protection type intrinsically safe - 'IS'.

* The same applies for the TT-PI-EX-TB/T base terminal, which includes an additional integrated PT100 resistor for cold junction compensation.

The two-part design of the process interface modules consists of a base terminal and pluggable electronics with various functions. Special features include mechanical coding against interchanging the electronics plugs, integrated blade isolation and test sockets, and easy supply voltage bridging.
