Energas introduces lower-cost German gas genset for South African market

October 2026 Electrical Power & Protection

Energas Technologies will supply R Schmitt Enertec’s new Energy Line genset to the South African market, expanding its gas-to-power offering with a cost-optimised option for industrial and commercial users requiring stable standalone electricity generation. Designed and manufactured in Germany and built around a German gas engine, the Energy Line is positioned below Schmitt Enertec’s existing higher-specification product range on capital cost. The lower entry price is achieved through focused standardisation, reduced system complexity and a purpose-built standalone operating concept, rather than by compromising the unit’s core reliability or serviceability.

“The Energy Line gives South African users access to German-engineered gas generation at a lower entry cost than Schmitt Enertec’s existing, more configurable product range,” says Laetitia Jansen van Vuuren of Energas Technologies. “The savings come from focused standardisation and a simpler standalone architecture, while German manufacturing, factory testing and an overhaul-based service philosophy remain central to the package.”

Lower cost through focused engineering

The Energy Line’s cost reduction starts with a lean electrical and mechanical architecture. A single-bearing alternator reduces component count and removes the need for a clutch assembly, while a unified platform limits layout variability and simplifies production engineering. The result is a repeatable package that can be assembled and delivered with less project-specific engineering than a highly customised system. A standard outdoor weather enclosure, enhanced cooling system and optional oxidation catalyst cover the principal configuration needs. This focused specification also reduces commissioning complexity and onsite integration work. Schmitt Enertec factory-tests each unit before shipment, and the manufacturer targets commissioning within one day once the site, gas supply and electrical interfaces are ready.

Three power ratings from one platform

The genset is rated at 400 kW in continuous-power (COP) duty, 450 kW in prime-power (PRP) duty, and 500 kW in emergency-standby (ESP) duty. Manufacturer-stated electrical efficiency rises from 39,9% at the 400 kW COP rating to 40,5% at 450 kW PRP, and 41% at the 500 kW ESP rating. Final performance will depend on the selected fuel, ambient conditions, gas quality and project design. The enhanced cooling configuration is designed for ambient temperatures of up to 45°C without derating, making the package relevant to hot-climate installations. Its intended operating concept is standalone or island-mode generation, including autonomous supplies for sites where process continuity is important.

Simplified service and fuel flexibility

The standard oil service interval is 700 operating hours. Lightweight aluminium access panels are intended to support single-person routine servicing, while reduced component variability and a standardised spare-parts approach simplify maintenance planning. The machine is designed around an overhaul-based lifecycle and carries a standard 12-month warranty. Standard fuel options include natural gas, liquefied natural gas, compressed natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas. Other gaseous fuels, including biogas, sewage gas, landfill gas, mine gas, wood gas, syngas and flare gas, can be evaluated as project-specific options. Fuel suitability and guaranteed output must be confirmed against a representative gas analysis.

A new price point within the Energas range

The Energy Line complements, rather than replaces, the broader ENERGIN product family already available from Energas. Schmitt Enertec’s established ENERGIN GEN range spans 115 kW to 500 kW, supports island or grid-parallel operation and reaches electrical efficiencies of up to 42,7%, depending on configuration and fuel. ENERGIN GEN+ and CHP variants additionally recover heat for hot-water or steam applications. By comparison, the Energy Line concentrates on a narrower 400 to 500 kW power band and standalone operation. This gives Energas a lower-cost route for customers whose priority is dependable electrical output and rapid deployment, while retaining

the existing product family for projects requiring broader ratings, grid-parallel capability, heat recovery or greater customisation.

Typical Energy Line applications include industrial production with continuous processes, operations with daytime-dominant or varying load profiles, centralised electricity supply for commercial facilities and residential compounds, and remote sites. An optional oxidation catalyst is available where project emissions requirements call for it.

Local integration and availability

Energas has represented R Schmitt Enertec in southern Africa since 2017, and integrates gas generation into wider project scopes that can include gas receiving, pressure reduction, metering, conditioning and fuel-delivery systems. The new Energy Line will be offered to South African customers following application review, gas analysis and site assessment. Project pricing, lead times and performance guarantees will be developed against each site’s duty profile, fuel composition, ambient conditions, electrical interface and emissions requirements.
