Distance monitoring and controlling through GSM and GPRS technology

February 2003 Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring

Distance monitoring and controlling of systems has always posed cost and reliability problems. Wavecom's WISMO modules offer the solution through utilising GSM and GPRS technology.

It is no longer necessary to carry the cost of personnel checking and implementing monitoring and controlling activities. If, for example, a remote weather beacon has to alert the weather bureau of sudden changes in the barometer pressure or just update information and statistics on a regular basis, the software could be programmed to do it and forward the information. The weather beacon can also be triggered to perform these functions on demand.

To ensure accurate and timeous reports, reliability of the equipment used is essential. Reliability could also mean defusing dangerous situations if, for example, the pressure in a pipeline is too high. The controller could be warned and he could activate corrective procedures immediately without the need for a technician to travel to the problem area.

Wavecom's new WISMO modems offer the solution to these problems, opening new opportunities for new telemetry developments. The WISMO range of wireless GSM and GPRS modems is flexible, easy-to-use and cost effective.

Wavecom also claims to have the world's smallest modular solution with the capability to embed applications on the module itself. This eliminates components, additional processing requirements and board space, and optimises size requirements to the minimum for applications where space is a problem.

The Fastrack modem is a rugged solution for standalone type applications and is used for immediate access to applications from vending machines in even the remotest places to data loggers situated on water lines. This modem is therefore the solution for electricity meters or alarm systems where fixed line access is a problem. Trinity Telecomm has found that these modems are also popular for mobile applications - ranging from harsh vehicle tracking environments to lift communication solutions for providing voice communication availability when things go wrong.
