New fibre-optic spectroscopy platform

October 2002 Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring

Avantes has developed a new spectrometer platform called AvaSpec, for low-cost fibre-optic spectroscopy applications in the UV/VIS/NIR range. This significant product development underpins the growing market for fibre-optic and computer interfaced miniature instruments for laboratory, industrial, biotechnology, medical and environmental analytical spectral sensors.

Market demands for multichannel spectrometers with simultaneous high-speed data sampling and the use of newly available low-noise, high-speed detector arrays have initiated the development.

The new family of spectrometers is based on an electronics design with a 14-bit multichannel AD converter, on-board microprocessor and USB/RS232 interface. The flexibility of the electronics allows different detector arrays, such as photo diode arrays, CCD-arrays and CMOS arrays with 102-2048 pixels to be implemented in the new optical bench design.

The optical benches available for the AvaSpec are 45 or 75 mm in focal length and can be used for measurements from 200-1100 nm, able to resolve down to 0,1 nm (FWHM). Several options, such as UV enhanced detector coatings, slits, filters and detector collection lenses optimise the performance for specific applications.

The AvaSpec can be configured as multichannel instrument, taking spectra from up to eight channels simultaneously with a minimal integration time of 2 ms. Fourteen programmable digital I/O ports can be used for external triggering, control of external light sources, shutters or process applications.

Supported by the comprehensive AvaSoft spectrometer software, several add-on application-oriented software packages are available for colour and irradiance measurements, export to Excel routines and for process control applications. The spectrometers are SMA-fibre coupled to Avantes' large range of light sources and accessories.
