The consumers and general public are becoming increasingly conscious of the quality of their drinking water, as well as the environmental water in rivers and dams. This trend has been amplified by media coverage of water related problems (cholera, crypto etc), the aggressive marketing campaigns of commercial companies selling bottled water, and the 'Green Movement'. This has resulted in stricter legislation for water quality and the government's promise of quality table water for everyone.
All over the country communities are faced with the need to spend millions of rands to rehabilitate and expand water and wastewater plants. One of the better ways to quantify the quality of water and the efficiency of filtration systems is to continuously monitor the turbidity of water.
What is turbidity?
Turbidity is the degree of haziness (dirtiness) of water as measured by the amount of light that is scattered by undissolved or suspended solids, organic and inorganic matter, and other micro organisms (bugs) in the water. Turbidity measurement is an accepted indicator of water quality, and Rand Water recently purchased 40 GLI continuous on-line turbidity-monitoring systems for use on their filter beds. There are over 10 000 GLI turbidity analysers in use in the USA and the UK.
