More communication options for Modbus

September 2000 Fieldbus & Industrial Networking

Opto 22, a manufacturer and marketer of industrial I/O systems, announced Modbus/TCP support for its new, award-winning SNAP Ethernet I/O product line. The SNAP-B3000-ENET Ethernet I/O brain with Modbus/TCP support allows customers to easily integrate Modbus-enabled third-party software with Opto 22's SNAP I/O product line, bringing more communication options to new and existing data acquisition and control applications.

Opto 22's implementation conforms to the Schneider Electric Modbus/TCP specification and allows the SNAP Ethernet I/O to communicate to a Modbus host at a rate of 10 or 100 Mbps. Opto 22 is claimed to be the first company to offer this I/O solution at these speeds. The SNAP-B3000-ENET allows multiple application-level protocols to run simultaneously.

Modbus/TCP protocol, hypertext transfer protocol (http) and Opto 22's open, documented, IEEE-1394-based memory-mapped protocol are among those supported.

SNAP Ethernet I/O continues a tradition of successful I/O products from Opto 22 that dates back to the early 1980s. Introduced in mid-1998, SNAP Ethernet I/O is the world's first industrial I/O system that combines pure TCP/IP communications, 10 or 100 MB performance and an open, documented protocol. Opto 22's SNAP Ethernet I/O also features the world's first I/O system with built-in web server for configuration, maintenance and operator interface. It allows users to interface analog and digital input/output devices to a computer. Typical applications include data acquisition, monitoring, discrete manufacturing and process control.
