The Society for Automation, Instrumentation, Measurement and Control (SAIMC) has announced the appointment of Johan Maartens to the position of Chief Operating Officer on a 12-month contract, effective 1 July 2016.
Johan Maartens.
Born and raised in Pietermaritzburg, Johan completed a B.Sc (Elec. Eng) at Potchefstroom University where he started the Engineering Society and Radio PUK. He subsequently joined the SAIMC as a member while working at Sasol as an instrumentation manager.
Next came a move to Mossel Bay as part of the project team to build Mossgas, whereafter he joined Siemens Business Services as a senior project manager. Johan became actively involved in the SAIMC when he learnt of the new CPD (continued professional development) requirements about to be introduced by ECSA. Then president, Johan van Jaarsveld, appointed him to council to manage this on behalf of the SAIMC and its members. Two years later he became president, a position he held until 2013 before handing over the reins to immediate past president, Vinesh Maharaj.
Johan’s primary responsibility as COO will be to work fulltime towards achieving the objectives set out in the SAIMC business plan. He will report to the Executive Committee of Oratile Sematle (president), Rob MacKenzie (vice president) and Vinesh Maharaj (immediate past president). Johan was appointed to the position by a unanimous vote from SAIMC council, after the necessary due diligence had been completed.
