Electron IT profile

November 2001 System Integration & Control Systems Design

Electron IT is a specialist division of Electron Technologies dedicated to providing simple, cost-effective and contemporary solutions in process automation. Harnessing its extensive process experience, Electron IT integrates electrical plant components with management information systems to provide innovative and comprehensive control solutions.

Electron IT is an accredited VAR for Siemens and is the authorised System Integrator for Schneider Automation. However, the company remains unrestricted to a specific product group, preferring to integrate systems that best meet the needs of the application.

* Electron IT is well equipped to provide solutions to overcome the harsh environments characteristic of the African continent. For example, although the coca-cola bottling and biothane effluent treatment plant in Angola is only 100 km from the country's capital, it is very isolated in terms of resources and communication links. The implemented system had to include enough manual redundancy to ensure operation with or without automation components. Through a methodical approach and careful management, Electron IT was able to complete the project on time.

* Integration of diverse automation components is another of Electron IT's strong points, as the following application proved: refurbishment operations at Chambishi Mine in Zambia included an ion exchange plant to extract cobalt from a solution. However, the regeneration of the resin involved needed to be automated to provide a continuous cycle, rather than a batch system. Electron IT was called upon to provide the EC&I management and automation for the process. The automation platform, Honeywell's PlantScape, was supplemented with Allen-Bradley PLCs to control the positioning drives on the plant. Electron IT worked alongside Hatch Africa to implement and optimise a control system with more than 20 interdependent flow and level control loops. The plant was fully automated, requiring minimal operator output. Setpoints and alarms were installed through a PanelView 660, local to the plant.

Understanding the role of AI in generative engineering design
System Integration & Control Systems Design
When a design engineer sets out to design a new part, component, or assembly, the intent is to meet the design requirements for fit, form and function, and also incorporate a certain degree of innovation and elegance to the overall design. There is no reason to re-invent the wheel by introducing a new design.

Choosing a system integrator
Editor's Choice System Integration & Control Systems Design
Automation is an essential part of manufacturing today. Whatever the size, an upgrade or migration project can be complex, and the risks can be high. This is where system integrators (SIs) can help. They can bring together complex subsystems or components of a larger system and make them operate as a whole.
