PLCs, DCSs & Controllers

Endress+Hauser’s RIA45 and RIA46

January 2014 PLCs, DCSs & Controllers

Large digits for clearly readable information, a brilliant display was the main focus of this new product development. Further to the display functionality, the electronics offers more – from loop power supply and transmitter functionality to a wide input supply range. The devices fit a variety of applications in the process industry and meet the requirements of devices installed in the field as well as those in panels.

Additionally, intuitive operation guarantees quick and easy commissioning. Depending on the application, the devices offer preset parameters to assist users during commissioning. When setting-up the devices via configuration software and the USB port of a PC, users are supported via help text.

The backlit five-digit, seven segment liquid crystal display, indicates process values in multicolour high-contrast. Measured or calculated value are shown in black and white while additional information like, TAG number, is shown in yellow. The information buttons in the front of the housing allow a manual scrolling through all channels and appropriate min/max values.

Designed to be optimum

The basic device includes a universal input for 0/4-20 mA current signals, voltage, resistance, RTDs and thermocouples, as well as an open collector to signal failures and device status. All inputs and outputs are galvanically isolated from each other and the system. Optionally, the devices can be equipped with a second universal input in combination with a second analog output and/or two limit relays. With the various optional features the displays can be perfectly adapted to all applications. Predefined mathematical operations provide quick and easy configuration of calculations. Two independent linearisation tables allow the definition of curves via 32 linearisation points.

Flexible and universal applicable

Two housing options cover all requirements, those in the field, as well as those in the panel or in the cabinet. RIA46 is supplied in an aluminium or glass-fibre reinforced plastic field housing. Both housing materials offer the protection class IP67/NEMA4x.

The RIA45 is available with the standard dimensions of 96x48 mm with protection class of IP65 on the front side. The wide range power supply ensures a compatible device for all voltages and supports warehousing.

The integrated application packages for standard operations such as one or two channel differential pressure applications contain a device set-up that is completed using only three steps. The devices also provide a device parameter preset so that a complete set-up can be done without individual parameter modification by the operator. The integrated application package for differential pressure allows easy and quick commissioning in differential pressure measurement applications, no matter if level or flow measurement is required. The software provides the complete channel set-up as well as the necessary calculations. Only the type of input signal and the signal range have to be set.

The devices are equipped with memory functionality, allowing minimum and maximum values of each input and of each calculated value to be stored. If required they can also be manually reset. In addition to this peak values and occurring events are logged, ie, an occurring failure or a violated limit value is listed in the historical diagnostics events. Up to six events in combination with the time will be logged in the ring memory. The current setup of the device is stored in a non-volatile memory for easy start-up after an outage.
