New on-line process liquid and slurry concentration analyser

December 2013 Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring

Until recently most on-line liquid analysis applications were done by analysers based on automated titrations. These analysers required up to four different consumable chemicals prepared with ultra-pure water as basis. Besides a dedicated sample system, they also feature several moving parts, such as solenoids, stirrers and pumps to dose, stir and drain these chemicals with each measurement.

The new Rhosonics ultrasound analyser, with its measuring technology based on hybrid sensors utilising ultrasound and acoustic impedance principles, can replace this old technology in one compact robust system. The measuring principle allows for the actual measurement to be done directly in the process instead of extracting a sample, which results in reduced cost of installation as well as low maintenance and cost of operation since there are no moving parts to chemicals that need to be replenished. Several sensor options are available in a number of different materials and configurations, such as a full-bore wafer, flow-through, insertion and dip-types, to suit processes from very corrosive to high pressures and temperatures. The analyser can be mounted several metres away from the sensors, which make it easy to install in applications from general purpose right up to zone 0 classifications. All measurement results are available in real-time at accuracies and repeatability comparable with laboratory analysis. There is also no long-term drift of results due to all internal signals being constantly checked against a stable reference and automatically corrected when required. Currently the analysers are applied in a wide range of applications, such as direct % or ppm concentrations, Brix, COD, TSS and densities in liquids, pulp and slurries.
