Turbidity and apparent colour detected by one sensor

September 2001 Sensors & Transducers

ClearCense, from Siemens Environmental Systems, features a combined sensing head to measure both turbidity and apparent colour. The low-cost, disposable sensing head is inserted directly into pressurised distribution systems, and for bypass measurement, a compact insertion probe is available.

The new system offers a solid-state transmitter and detector, dual parameter measurement and automatic compensation for light source variability. Readily transportable, the unit provides in-situ monitoring with no sample degradation.

The ClearCense measurement cell is packaged in a 36 mm diameter replaceable head and interfaced to a dedicated microprocessor-based control and signal processing electronics unit. Operating with RS232 or analog outputs, remote communications are possible and an adjacent CENSAR multiparameter probe can share the same electronics.

The sensing head utilises a simple Nephelometer arrangement to measure scattered light at 90° to the transmitted beam. The light source operates in the 840 to 920 nm band to reduce effects of sample colour. The head includes facilities for an optional reference light path, which can be configured to compensate for window fouling effects.

The colour measurement technique is based on direct absorbance of a single transmitted light beam in the 400 to 460 nm band. Compensation for the presence of suspended particles in the sample is primarily derived from the turbidity measurement. If required by the application, the sensing head can also be configured with a second nonabsorbed reference beam.

ClearCense is well suited for direct in-pipe insertion up to 1,6 MPa (16 bar), insertion into bypass/flow cell applications and on-line measurement for realtime network modelling systems. It is also suited as a high range option for final effluent monitoring and as a low range version for drinking water applications. It can be used for monitoring up to customer tap, parameters such as colour, turbidity, pH, Redox, dissolved oxygen and chlorine.
