Reliable pH measurement for chlor-alkali processes

October 2013 Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring

Metler Toledo Process Analytics offers the InPro 4850i pH electrode designed specifically for the requirements of the chlor-alkali industry. The InPro 4850i features a sodium-sensitive glass membrane that uses the brine present in chlorine production as a reference. The hermetically sealed reference provides a barrier against oxidising agents that poison other sensors. This feature, combined with digital transmission of the measurement signal, means the InPro 4850i is ideally suited to chlorine production.

Unlike almost all other pH electrodes, the InPro 4850i does not have a diaphragm, therefore poisoning of the electrode’s sodium reference system is impossible. This design innovation ensures stable measurement and eliminates sensor drift. The electrode’s high quality pH-sensitive glass membrane is extremely resistant to chlor-alkali process conditions, enabling precise pH measurement.

The output signal from traditional dual-membrane pH electrodes is subject to electrical interference. The InPro 4850i’s sodium-sensitive glass has a high impedance. Factoring in additional impedance of the cable between sensor and transmitter means that the signal from the sensor is highly sensitive to interference from surrounding equipment. Touching or approaching the measurement system can create a change in the output.

Intelligent Sensor Management (ISM) technology solves this challenge. Sensors with ISM convert the analogue measurement signal into a low-impedance digital signal which is immune to electrical interference, ensuring 100% signal integrity and stability. ISM technology also offers sensor self-diagnostics, pre-calibration of sensors, and Plug and Measure start up to simplify installation and maintenance tasks. This unique combination of dual-membrane, sealed reference system and digitised signal makes the InPro 4850i unique and the ideal solution to pH measurement in the chlor-alkali industry.

Mettler Toledo offers a wide portfolio of pH, ORP, DO, conductivity and turbidity sensors together with a full range of transmitters, cleaning and calibration systems.
