Honeywell to automate systems at Finnish biomass plant

June 2013 System Integration & Control Systems Design

Honeywell has announced that it will provide a comprehensive automation solution for a new steam production plant in Finland. The contract, awarded by environmental management specialists Ekokem, covers all building automation, process control and safety systems for a new bubble fluidised-bed (BFB) boiler site.

Under its integrated main automation contractor (I-MAC) approach, Honeywell will design, deliver and install the automation, instrumentation, controls and wider systems for the plant, including fire detection, video surveillance and access control. The package will be based on Honeywell’s Enterprise Buildings Integrator building systems solution, with process control through Experion PKS. Other Honeywell solutions being supplied include Safety Manager, its SIL certified integrated safety platform; Digital Video Manager, for video monitoring; and Uniformance Process History Database.

The scope also covers the design and installation of electrification for the process and building, as well as field instruments for the plant.

“As the integrated main automation contractor we are able to offer a single point of contact which lowers the project risk, but also a tightly integrated solution on delivery,” said Pascal Stijns, Honeywell’s business leader for power solutions. “This solution will give operators comprehensive visibility and control of the entire facility through a single intuitive system.”

Once completed later this year, the greenfield site is expected to produce 43 GWh of heat annually for Ekokem client KWH Mirka at its plant for coated abrasives in Western Finland. This integrated automation solution is the first of its kind on this type of process, and is well positioned to enable Ekokem to take advantage of increasing demand for such solutions.

“Working with Honeywell we will be able to offer clients a cost-effective solution for small and medium scale energy production harnessing waste for a more efficient solution,” said Petri Onikki, technical director, Ekokem. “An integrated package means reducing project costs and providing efficient and safe control with minimal personnel.”
