Metal oxide surge arresters
September 2012
Electrical Power & Protection
The SBKC range of metal oxide surge arresters from Tridelta is designed to protect transformers, switchgear and plant against atmospheric and switching overvoltages. The surge arresters are available with rated voltages from 6 kV to 288 kV and are suitable for use in solidly earthed systems with nominal voltages of up to 362 kV and frequencies of 16 Hz to 62 Hz.
The fully encapsulated silicone cage-like structure gives the active components high mechanical strength, and the silicone housing is moulded directly onto the ZnO varistors. The line discharge class 3 surge arresters have been tested with a rated short-circuit current of 63 kA and with long duration current impulses of 1000 A for a duration of 2000 μs.
All metallic fittings are manufactured from aluminum alloy and the connections are available in either hot dipped galvanised metal or stainless steel. Optional accessories include spark gap monitors, surge counters and diagnostic devices. The cage design arresters can be installed in a standing or suspended position in transformer substations and as line-side arresters in overhead power lines.
