Power and energy meters for early warning

January 2012 Electrical Power & Protection

The PM700 series power meters from RS Components give early warning of impending problems that could lead to equipment malfunctions or downtime. They also allow users to diagnose and isolate the cause of power related equipment or process problems.

Ideal for demand control applications, they offer outstanding quality, versatility and functionality in a cost-effective, ultra-compact unit. They are simple to use and highly accurate, and have a large, bright LCD display for easy readability, even in extreme lighting conditions and at awkward viewing angles. An ideal replacement for analogue meters, they can be used for standalone metering in custom panels, switchboards, switchgear, gensets, motor control centres and UPS systems.

Capable of power, demand, energy, power factor and frequency measurements, PM700 meters are available in a variety of flexible configurations and have IEC62053-21 Class-1 and IEC62053-22 Class 0.5S (PM750 only) certification for basic sub-billing or cost allocation. They are available in two versions: PM710 basic with one RS-485 port (Modbus); and PM750 basic with RS-485 port, two digital inputs, one digital output and 15 user configurable alarms.

They are easily mounted without tools (just two clips) and with a mounting depth of only 50 mm are ideal for OEMs and panel builders. They support direct connection up to 480 V AC Ph-Ph and seamlessly integrate with PowerLogic energy management systems. Their accurate power, energy and demand measurements can be used for bill verification, monitoring backup power for critical systems and cost effective energy management solutions.

The PM750 has 15 user-configurable alarms that can be used to trigger on the over and under conditions most commonly found in power systems. Alarms can also be communicated through the RS-485 port for remote monitoring; and through the meter’s digital outputs for control applications they can help avoid penalties and perform proactive maintenance. Applications include panel instrumentation; sub metering and cost allocation; remote monitoring of an electrical installation; harmonic monitoring and contact optimisation; and load profiling. The PM750 has a single pulse output and Modbus communications, allowing all measurements to be read remotely.
