Pressure Measurement & Control

Pressure measurement in paper production

July 2011 Pressure Measurement & Control

It is said that pressure measurement is one of the most important control functions in the paper-making process. This means that the pressure measuring instruments need to be robust and able to deliver stable measurements over long periods.

Vega has successfully installed its differential pressure transmitter, Vegadif 65, at several paper production facilities in Germany. This instrument copes well where steam, condensate, temperatures up to 190°C and pressures up to 12 bar are involved.

The Vegadif 65 is used in conjunction with differential pressure flow elements for the measurement of flow in the steam feed system, where it records precisely the pressure difference at the orifice plates or Pitot tubes.

The steam feed is used in several ways. Steam heated cylinders in the drying section of the paper machine remove residual moisture from the paper. Vegadif monitors the heat transfer from the drying cylinder to the paper via a differential pressure measurement between the inlet and outlet.

The condensate that forms on the inside wall of the cylinder is continuously skimmed off via a siphon and collected in condensate containers. Vegadif is also used here for level measurement from residual steam (at temperatures up to 100°C) and overpressure.

The Vegadif 65 has extremely versatile mounting options and can measure flow, level, interface or density change in vessels. For example it can be mounted with a direct connection or connection via an impulse line on tubes to measure flow rate; in a unilateral isolating diaphragm configuration for pressure measurement of level in ventilated or open containers; in a bilateral isolating diaphragm configuration for level measurement in vessels with head pressure and in a bilateral isolating diaphragm configuration for density or interface measurement.
