Chemical storage sites, whether handling raw materials, intermediates or finished products, face complex measurement requirements due to the wide range of substances stored. These include corrosive acids, alkalis, volatile hydrocarbons and toxic chemicals, all requiring specialised measuring solutions. VEGA’s VEGAPULS radar sensors, VEGABAR pressure transmitters and VEGASWING level switches deliver precise and reliable measurements for these applications.
Radar level measurement
The VEGAPULS 6X uses an 80 GHz radar beam to deliver a highly focused signal, significantly reducing the risk of interference from tank walls or internal fixtures such as mixers and coils. This allows precise detection of liquid surfaces within storage tanks, regardless of their shape or the presence of internal obstructions.
Pressure measurement
For reliable pressure measurement in chemical storage, the VEGAFLEX 81 provides a robust solution. The VEGABAR 80 series offers a flexible approach by combining pressure sensors with level measurement systems. Integrating VEGABAR transmitters alongside VEGAPULS radar sensors gives operators real-time and comprehensive insight into tank conditions, greatly enhancing safety.
The VEGABAR 83 is notable for its ceramic-capacitive sensor technology, enabling measurement of gases, vapours and liquids accurately even under extreme pressure conditions. Its ceramic cell construction offers excellent resistance to corrosion and abrasion, making it well suited to tanks storing reactive substances such as acids and alkalis. The VEGABAR 83 provides precision and long-term stability for monitoring both process pressures and hydrostatic levels in demanding chemical environments.
Level detection and safety
Continuous measurement and point-level detection play a significant role in safety, providing critical alarms for high and low levels in chemical tanks. The VEGASWING range uses vibration technology where the device’s fork vibrates until it touches the liquid, triggering an alarm on contact. This approach stays reliable under extreme temperature and pressure conditions.
The VEGASWING 63 functions as a universal level switch for all liquids, including hazardous chemicals, offering millimetre-accurate detection regardless of installation position. It covers empty and full detection, overfill protection, dry run prevention and pump safeguarding, with its switching point easily set via tube extension.
Integration and diagnostics
VEGA’s measurement technologies work independently of the environmental factors common in chemical storage. Non-contact solutions decrease wear and exposure, lowering maintenance costs and reducing downtime. Sensors and transmitters integrate smoothly into process control systems via digital communication options including HART, PROFIBUS and Foundation fieldbus, allowing remote monitoring of levels and pressures and supporting predictive maintenance. Advanced diagnostics speed up troubleshooting and optimise operations.
The VEGAPULS 6X and VEGABAR 83 are certified for hazardous zones and meet global standards including ATEX and IECEx, making them suited to explosive or corrosive environments.
