Accurate level measurement sits at the heart of every efficient mining operation, from controlling feed rates and managing slurry densities to preventing overflows in tailings ponds. The VEGAPULS 6X radar sensor was developed to deliver that certainty in environments where conventional instruments can struggle. Designed as a universal radar solution, the VEGAPULS 6X removes the complexity of selecting between multiple radar technologies. It measures liquids and solids with stable, interference-free performance, even when dust, steam, foam or condensation would normally challenge accuracy.

Simplicity is important in mining. A ‘one sensor for all’ approach reduces spare-parts inventory, simplifies maintenance and limits unplanned shutdowns. In silos, bins and surge hoppers, dependable level data reduces the risk of empty running, overfilling or uneven flow. In tanks and sumps, it helps maintain process balance and prevent avoidable spills. These efficiencies translate directly into improved throughput and stronger control over energy and water use.

Pressure measurement with confidence

From slurry pipelines to filtration plants, pressurised systems demand constant control. In these applications, the VEGABAR 80 and VEGADIF 85 series provide the durability and responsiveness needed to protect both process efficiency and site safety.

Backed by more than four decades of pressure measurement expertise, the VEGABAR 80 range combines advanced ceramic and metallic measuring cells to deliver stable, drift-free readings across liquids, gases and viscous media. Its resistance to abrasion and chemical attack supports long service life, while built-in diagnostics help operators move from reactive maintenance to predictive intervention.

Within this family, the VEGABAR 86 has become particularly valuable in flotation circuits. Flotation cells depend on maintaining a stable froth layer. If it is too thin, it cannot carry enough valuable particles to the surface. If it is too thick, it signals that reagents are not reacting quickly enough, so less material gets processed. Because froth is constantly disturbed by aeration and shifting solids content, conventional level measurement struggles to keep pace.

VEGABAR 86 solves this through density-compensated level measurement, using electronic differential pressure to calculate accurate froth levels even as slurry density swings. This stabilises the control loop so operators can hold the froth exactly where it needs to be without the capillaries, impulse lines or mechanical parts that typically wear out in this environment. Its wear-free ceramic measuring cell keeps maintenance low under heavy, abrasive slurry conditions. For flotation-heavy operations in Africa’s copper, platinum and gold belts, this combination of accuracy and low upkeep translates directly into better recovery and fewer control-loop surprises.

The VEGADIF 85 brings similar confidence to differential pressure measurement. Compact yet robust, it supports flotation and separation processes where precise pressure differentials influence yield, quality and overall plant stability. VEGA’s pressure portfolio plays an important role in protecting critical mining assets. Pumps, pipelines, filters, thickeners and tailings systems all depend on stable pressure monitoring to avoid damage, detect abnormal conditions early, and maintain safe operating limits. By delivering reliable pressure data in abrasive, chemically aggressive and high-temperature environments, VEGA helps maintenance and operations teams identify risk before it becomes failure.

Point level protection where it matters most

Not every measurement point needs continuous data; some simply need to know when a critical limit has been reached. This is the role of VEGASWING sensors, which uses a tuning-fork sensing element to detect full or empty conditions with millimetre accuracy, regardless of foam, turbulence or changes in medium density.

At a copper and cobalt operation in the Democratic Republic of Congo, VEGASWING switches are used to guard columns of acidic scrub water, preventing both overfill and dry-run conditions that would otherwise interrupt the flow of medium to downstream stages. Because the switches have no moving parts and require no calibration against the medium, they hold up reliably in corrosive, high-pH environments where mechanical float switches would quickly degrade, and they integrate easily into existing plant control systems for automated pump protection.

On African mines, this makes VEGASWING a natural complement to VEGA’s continuous level and pressure instruments. Where radar or pressure sensors provide the ongoing picture of a process, VEGASWING delivers the failsafe trigger that protects pumps, prevents spills and keeps operations running without constant manual checks.

Density measurement without interruption

Few mining processes are as punishing as slurry transport, yet density measurement is essential to recovery, separation efficiency and throughput. The SOLITRAC 31 addresses this challenge through a non-intrusive radiometric approach using gamma radiation to measure slurry density without coming into contact with the medium.

Because it does not touch the process material, the instrument helps eliminate wear, blockages and contamination risks while providing continuous, highly accurate readings. Slurry that is too thin or too dense can affect pumping efficiency, separation behaviour, reagent use and recovery rates, so continuous, non-contact density information lets operators make faster process adjustments without interrupting production or exposing instruments to unnecessary wear.

A key component of any radiometric measurement system is a radiation source holder, such as the VEGASOURCE 81. This unit is responsible for safely housing and directing the gamma emitter used in the measurement process. It ensures that radiation is emitted in a controlled and defined direction towards the measurement path, while effectively shielding the surrounding environment in all other directions. This design is critical for operational safety and regulatory compliance in industrial settings.

The VEGASOURCE 81 is engineered for high operational reliability, featuring pneumatic actuation of the source holder for safe handling and control. Its compact design allows for simple installation in constrained spaces, while its shielding efficiency helps minimise the need for extensive controlled areas around the installation. This makes it well suited for integration into existing systems where space and access may be limited.

Data for the digital mine

As automation and data-led decision making reshape the mining industry, instrumentation is becoming part of a much broader digital ecosystem.
