Portable gas analyser for hazardous environments

April 2011 Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring

The Servomex 5100 is powered by advanced lithium ion rechargeable batteries and the IP65 rated instrument is a replacement for the popular, but now obsolete, 570A hazardous area analyser. The device, which allows users to store up to 200 measurements in its memory, is the first intrinsically safe infrared analyser, providing a single measurement for 0–10% CO2 and 0–25% CO2.

Considerably smaller and lighter than the 570A, the instrument uses non-depleting paramagnetic or infrared sensing technologies (depending on the gas being detected) to ensure high reliability and a low cost-of-ownership. Typical applications include combustion optimisation in hazardous areas, natural gas processing, use in refineries, checking centrifuges prior to start-up, HyCo facilities, catalytic cracker regeneration, inerting in tank farms and other general process monitoring.

The Servomex 5100 analyser has ATEX (Ex II 1G Ex ia IIC T4) and IECEx (Ex ia IIC T4) approvals for use in hazardous areas.

For oxygen measurements, the Servomex utilises a non-depleting paramagnetic sensor, optimised for portable applications, with temperature compensation built into the analyser’s digital electronics.

Infrared sensor technology is used to measure CO2 or CO, a technology that delivers good accuracy and specificity in portable applications even in the presence of flammable or toxic samples.
