Chip scale atomic clock

March 2011 Sensors & Transducers

Comtest Technologies, accredited southern African partner to Symmetricom, has introduced the SA.45s Chip Scale Atomic Clock. Symmetricon supplies highly precise timekeeping technologies, instruments and solutions for the generation, synchronisation and distribution of precise time and frequency signals. The SA.45s provides the accuracy and stability of atomic clock technology while achieving dramatic reductions in size, weight, and power consumption. The newest member of Symmetricom’s Quantum family of atomic oscillators is ideal for portable applications requiring precise synchronisation and timekeeping, especially in GPS-denied environments. It weighs only 35 grams, requires only 115 mW of power and is two orders of magnitude more accurate than the more power consuming quartz based solutions it replaces.

Atomic oscillators, or atomic clocks, employ the fundamental physical principles that define world time. When the atoms of certain elements are excited to resonance they emit radiation of a precise frequency. Hydrogen, cesium and rubidium are the elements most commonly used. Oscillators that are synchronised to this frequency produce a timing signal that is extremely accurate and stable – much more so than signals produced by crystal based technology. Symmetricom’s Quantum family achieves this accuracy and stability in atomic oscillators of extraordinarily small size and low power consumption. These atomic clocks are small enough to be embedded directly on a circuit board and are ideal for portable applications where size, weight, and power consumption are key issues.
