November 2010 Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring

Thermo Scientific (a Thermo Fisher brand) has offered air quality products and services since 1970. The company says it is committed to being a global leader in environmental monitoring applications using its knowledge, application expertise and instrument technology to help customers succeed in protecting people and the environment.

To support this, Thermo Fisher manufactures a wide range of gas analysers, probes, opacity monitors, continuous emissions monitoring systems (CEMS) and other critical components required for unattended, long-term reliability. Its extensive portfolio of product offerings includes solutions for both gas and particulate monitoring. Utilising state-of-the-art technologies along with long-term, distinguished industry performance, products are made to operate continuously in extreme monitoring environments and provide users with the precision and reproducibility critical monitoring applications depend on.

An example of a CEMS is the 60i multigas analyser and iMEGA system that provides innovative options utilising the following technologies:

* FTIR – Fourier Transfer Infrared: used in multigas analysis systems for measurement of source emissions.

* NDIR – nondispersive infrared: used to measure carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, HCl, and other infrared-absorbing gases.

* Chemiluminescence: for the measurement of nitrogen-based compounds.

* Pulsed fluorescence: for the determination of SO.

* FID - flame ionisation detection: measures hydrocarbons to meet the criterion of USEPA Methods 25A and 25B.

* Atomic fluorescence: the technology utilised by the Mercury Freedom System.

* Transmissometers for opacity monitoring.

* Cross-stack and in-stack ultrasonic monitors for determining flow of gas stream.

* Both full extractive and dilution extractive probes.

Applications are found in electric utilities, power generation, cement, pharmaceutical, chemicals, refineries, pulp and paper incinerators, turbines, boilers and sulphur recovery units.
