Accurate, reliable measurement of H2S and SO2 in the tail gas from a Claus sulphur recovery plant is critical. Unfortunately, tail gas analysis has historically been one of the most difficult applications because of problems with sample line plugging due to the sulphur vapours present in the sample.
The Ametek Western Research Model 880-NSL (No Sample Line) tail gas analyser is a compact, rugged, transmitter-style instrument that mounts directly on the process pipe to eliminate sample line plugging. The photometer combines a long lamp life (estimated five years) with other innovative features designed to minimise maintenance and increase reliability. The fast response 880-NSL is equipped with anti-clogging blowback features that automatically initiate an air blowback of the analyser should any internal fault condition occur. The analyser continuously monitors itself for proper operation and has built-in alarm features.
Of stainless steel construction, the 880-NSL is suitable for most sulphur recovery units including typical Claus processes, Claus with tail gas cleanup and Claus with oxygen enrichment. Both the Zone 1 and Class 1, Division 2 versions are suitable for direct outdoor installation in most parts of the world to provide ±2% of full scale accuracy, ±0,15% full scale sensitivity and a response in less than 15 seconds.
