Ion-selective electrodes

July 2010 Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring

Van London – pHoenix Company offers a variety of solid state, polymer membrane, gas sensing and reference ion-selective electrodes. The ISE’s incorporate significant advancements in electrode design for better reliability, sensitivity, and reproducibility. Van London manufactures mono ISE electrodes, glass combination electrodes – sealed or refillable, epoxy combination electrodes – spring loaded, sealed or refillable, as well as custom designs.

Combination ISEs are advantageous in that they are often less expensive than a pair of individual half-cell electrodes and the more compact geometry allows use in smaller volumes of samples. Combination ion-selective probes have thus been designed and optimised for the following analyte ions: ammonium, bromide, cadmium, calcium, chloride, copper, cyanide, fluoride, fluoroborate, iodide, lead, magnesium, nitrate, perchlorate, potassium, silver, sulphide, and surfactant. These ion-selective electrodes are easy to use and custom designed to fit any modern pH/mV meter, ISE meter, or on-line fluoride instrumentation.

Considering all the analytical tools available, why choose ISEs in the first place? They can be used from 0,1 to 10 000 ppm, have advantages over colorimetric or gravimetric methods, and the electrode bodies are shock-proof and chemically-resistant. Electrodes, once calibrated, can monitor concentration continuously, analyse the sample within 1 to 2 minutes, and be placed in samples without sample pretreatment or destruction of the sample. Best of all, electrodes are inexpensive and great screening tools for identifying dissolved salts in samples.

Thus, the advantages of ISE electrodes are that they are responsive over a wide concentration range, and not affected by colour, turbidity, or sample size. They are rugged and provide continuous real-time measurements with a rapid response time. They are also relatively low in cost to purchase and operate.
