Power saving motor from SEW-Eurodrive

July 2010 Electrical Power & Protection

According to SEW-Eurodrive the investment costs for electrical drives are minor when compared to the overall investment in a system or plant, but the energy consumption of the selected drive technology has a decisive influence on the costs that follow. If all costs incurred during the life cycle of a system are compared, it can be seen that energy costs of systems that have not been optimised can constitute up to 90% of the follow-up costs. This shows that optimising the energy efficiency of each individual component and combining the drive technology to match the specific application can achieve significant economic benefits.

SEW-Eurodrive launched its new DR series of motors during May 2010. The new modular system for AC motors offers millions of drive combinations that can be used in many different applications. Independent of the required energy efficiency class, the whole range of DR motor options is available in all efficiency levels. The motor complies with international standards and meets the new parts of the IEC motor standard.

The modular DR motor system comprises three energy efficient motor variants (IE1, IE2 and IE3) and offers an ideally matched brake concept as well as encoders which are integrated in the motor. The DR motor was approved and certified in countries, including Europe, USA, Canada, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, Korea and China. It was designed with energy efficiency classes from all over the world in mind and complies with IEC 60034, NEMA MG1 and CSA C22.2 requirements as well.

Combining all the different design requirements optimises the processes of motor selection, ordering and logistics. Additional features such as brake monitoring, shaft cantered hollow shaft encoder, thermal motor protection, temperature detection, air filters, fans and backstops can be added depending on the customer’s requirements.

“Energy efficiency is not negotiable in businesses today,” comments Ute Bormann, SEW-Eurodrive GM, sales and marketing. “The total cost of ownership and the long-term effect of an installation is something which customers consider when they install new products. We feel that this new motor makes us increasingly competitive by offering our customers reliable and effective solutions.”

SEW-Eurodrive has added a user-friendly energy-saving calculator to their website. The calculator needs only a few application details to give users an estimated energy saving per annum as well as an indication of the amortisation period.
