Endress+Hauser at WISA 2010

July 2010 News

Endress+Hauser’s Hennie Pretorius (business driver water and waste water), Jan Swart (product manager analytical), Farhaana Mohedien and staff from the KwaZulu-Natal office exhibited and attended the Durban WISA 2010 Biennial Conference during April.

The conference was held as parallel sessions with management and institutional affairs, potable water, waste water, environmental aspects and industrial effluent the main topics.

Some of the highlights were also success stories for Endress+Hauser. Firstly, BKS consulting presented a paper on ‘The characterisation of raw water from the river Nile’. The average sludge that has to be settled and handled by the purification plant at Khartoum in the Sudan is quite easy to manage for most of the year. During flooding however, the amount of sludge is more than 100 times the average with the turbidity of the water ranging from 45 to 15 000 NTU. This was the biggest challenge for plant designers Biwater, who bought most of the instrumentation from Endress+Hauser SA.

The other project involving Endress+Hauser was the sea water desalination plant in Namibia (for the Trekkopje Mine), presented by Keyplan. The topic was ‘Energy efficiency for a sea water desalination plant in Namibia’. Here the biggest challenge was the environmental conditions as the plant was built right next to the ocean. The selection of the appropriate instrumentation for this harsh environment was key to the success of the project.

It was clear from the range of topics, that water, waste water, industrial effluent and membrane technologies (reverse osmosis and desalination plants) are in the spotlight and a lot of work and research is being done to make these processes more efficient as well as easier to maintain. Endress+Hauser says its expertise and instrumentation is a very good fit for all these types of plants as it has a complete water and waste water instrumentation product basket for the industry. All the analytical sensors used in the water and waste water industry are now available with ‘Memosens’ technology, which together with the new dual channel CM44 transmitter gives the company an increased presence in environmental industries.
