April 2010
Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring
The aim of the FLL (First Lego League) robotics competition is to do research and build robots that transform the way we look at transportation. Each yearly challenge has two parts, the project and the robot game. Working in teams of three to 10 children and guided by at least one adult coach, teams have eight weeks to build an autonomous robot to carry out pre-designed missions in 2 minutes and 30 seconds.
A group of 14-year-old girls from Hoërskool Waterkloof, Pretoria, rose to the challenge and represented their school at the National Championships in Johannesburg during December 2009. Team ‘SuperBoom’ was ranked as one of the best in South Africa – overall second place in the above mentioned championships – for which it has been invited to compete in the European Championships in Istanbul from 21-24 April.

The girls are a hard working dedicated team, who are very enthusiastic and would like to be given the opportunity to promote engineering and robotics in South Africa by representing school and country in the competition in Istanbul. Unfortunately they do not have the necessary funds to pursue their dream of participating in an international competition. Sponsors, please assist them to raise these funds needed to fly SA’s flag in Istanbul this April.
